Drumming with a Groove

Alan Connon, a professional drummer from Ireland conducted a two-day Drums Clinic and private sessions with drummers at Kohima on January 29 and 30 at the Music Academy Kohima. This academy is committed to developing and facilitating quality music education, covering all genres, in Nagaland. Alan has been a session drummer for 10 years and is currently with the Irish band Jack L.

Excerpts from an interaction with Alan:

Music Academy (MA): What is the most fundamental role of the drummer in today’s context of a contemporary world?

Alan: The most fundamental role of the drummer is for them to remember and acknowledge that the drummer is the backbone of a band. He/she dictates the sound and energy of music played. He/she is the pace-setter and tone-setter.

MA: Tell us a bit about the private sessions you have had with our drummers.

Alan: I believe that drumming skills are satisfactorily high. Most drummers were able to grasp the concept, and demonstrations given were correctly responded. Learning notation for a drummer increases his/her marketability and versatility. Otherwise the drummer is limited.

MA: What are the three top non-musical qualities a successful drummer needs, according to you?

Alan: There is more to being a successful musician. On top of the most important music qualities it helps to possess the following qualities.

  • Be open, understanding and be a fun person
  • Be physically fit
  • Be adventurous, and not be afraid to take risks.
